Program Overview:
Summary
As a key subsidiary of the Department for Transport’s rail infrastructure, Northern Rail maintains rigorous health, safety, and environmental training protocols. Edwardicc was selected to collaborate with them in creating a comprehensive, scalable training framework for their enterprise operations.
Business Challenge
Operating over 2,500 daily train services across nearly 550 stations, Northern Rail serves as a critical transportation lifeline throughout northern England, connecting thousands daily to employment, family, recreation, and education opportunities.
In 2016, Northern Rail invited proposals to become their exclusive partner for comprehensive Health, Safety, and Environmental training across their entire network and 6,000-member workforce. The objective was developing a training program supporting their goal to consolidate all HSE training resources while gaining complete oversight of delivery consistency and instructional quality.
Our Approach
Edwardicc designed a customized solution enabling Northern Rail to centralize operations, maintain control, track progress, and generate comprehensive performance reporting.
Implementation & Results
The Northern Rail training initiative encompasses a comprehensive HSE course portfolio through our collaborative partnership, featuring IOSH, NEBOSH, and ISEP (formerly IEMA) accredited programs. Beyond accredited qualifications, we deliver specialized Edwardicc Approved training, including Fire Risk Assessment and Contractor courses, facilitated through our internal team, virtual delivery platforms, open training network, and digital learning.
When pandemic restrictions emerged, Edwardicc partnered with Northern Rail to transition numerous courses from physical classroom formats to virtual and online delivery models. Participant feedback has remained consistently exceptional throughout this evolution.
Program Highlights
Perhaps the most fulfilling aspect of our partnership has been our combined flexibility in developing and implementing customized online courses for the 6,000-person workforce.
These programs have been deployed and integrated within Northern Rail’s proprietary Learning Management System, providing unlimited course and material access without requiring additional budgetary allocation.
Northern Rail employees now access 15 Edwardicc training courses covering topics including environmental sustainability, passenger safety for trains and platforms, COSHH, Asbestos management, and notably, ‘The Ten Most Common Hazards within Northern’.
